Vaccines & Disease Prevention

Core Feline Vaccinations

The definitions of core and non-core vaccines described apply to feline vaccines. The core feline vaccines are those for feline herpesvirus 1 (FHV1), feline calicivirus (FCV), feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) and rabies.

Now we can discuss those vaccines in further depth as well as the disease they are to prevent. Furthermore we also know that although vaccines are to prevent the onset of a disease they never warrant 100% so it is our responsibility as animal advocate to keep our kitty's safe and not expose them to possible infections if at all possible. However, in times of travel or transport a kitten or cat may be exposed, if they do contract a respiratory illness that is similar to Feline Herpes for instance if vaccinated they will suffer little complications to exposure in most cases, this of course as stated doesn't mean to freely expose any animal to such disease! I only mention this because it is such a common disease now in many shelters, shows, cattery's etc and this is one reason you as a pet owner must ultimately provide your pet with it's first and second course of boosters. Veterinary Hospitals will allow a cat with higher tidier counts in senior age's as early as 6-7yrs old if housed souly indoors and never introduced to other cats to stop a few vaccines if they are known to have poor reactions. But that is the desecration of you as a pet parent and your veterinarian. We do not recommend to vaccinate with Non-core vaccines, they are not proven to reduce risk of contagion and some research shows may do more harm then good. So we will only cover Core vaccines. Rabies is not one of those Vaccines, it is MANDATORY!

More about Vaccines and the needs for them here! Remember Vaccines are a way to prevent disease and boost the immunity of your feline companion.
Cornell University has a wonderful online brochure to further describe the reason and needs for vaccination in felines. Click below!
