Bengals

& Asian Leopard Cats (ALC)

The ancestry of the Bengal cat derives from a spotted domestic cat and a small wild spotted feline called the Mainland leopard cat or Prionailurus bengalensis (scientific name).

The Bengal’s wild progenitorThough many people call them “Asian Leopard Cats” (ALC), technically, the exact species name is “Leopard Cat” Prionailurus bengalensis.
Several subspecies of these little spotted felines have been described, and they range from 3 to 20 pounds in weight.
Being small predators, they are right in the middle of the food chain, and are shy, nocturnal and afraid of humans and larger predators which have been hunting them for centuries.
You can find more informations about Leopard cats below, but I also wrapped the basics into this beautiful infographic. Check it out.

Distribution and habitat
Leopard cats are indigenous to a large part of southern Asia. They can be found in agriculturally used areas, deep jungles and forested habitats from southern India eastward through Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, China, Korea and into Russia’s Far East.
Recently, Leopard cats from the Sunda Islands, such as Sumatra, Borneo, Bali, Java, and the Philippines have been recognized as a separate species, the Sunda leopard cat (Prionailurus javanensis).
Based on genetic studies two subspecies of the Mainland leopard cat are tentatively recognised:
  • Prionailurus bengalensis bengalensis in South Asia from Pakistan to China and probably the Malay Peninsula.
  • Prionailurus bengalensis euptilurus (Amur Leopard Cat) in Russian Far East, Manchuria, Taiwan, Iriomote Island and Tsushima Island.

Hunting and diet
They are known to eat mostly small birds, rodents, amphibians, reptiles, fish and insects in the wild. Some of them occasionally venture into farmyards to prey on domestic chickens.
It’s been said that when ALCs attack and kill their victims, they go straight in for the kill rather than playing with their prey as if they were toys. But there is little data to support or disprove this.

"Is declawing cruel to cats? New York might be the first state to ban it. To declaw a cat, you amputate each toe at the first knuckle, taking off bone along with tendons and the claw. This is a controversial operation, and some veterinarians say it can lead to lifelong complications, pain, and lameness.May 14, 2015

Declawing is already banned in the following countries: England, Scotland, Wales, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Slovenia, Portugal, Belgium, Spain, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand.

Learn more about Declawing or donate to help big cats with Paw recovery surgery!
Did you know Zoo's and other public facilities have declawed Lions, Tigers, Jaguars and Leopards to house them for our entertainment. This is cruel as Declawed animals loose so many natural abilities such a balance to name one important need for the claws! Its not just for hunting purposes. Support the cats, don't declaw and donate to help those who have been mutilated:

The Paw Project

Bengals are banned in some states, know your pet ownership rights if your state doesn't allow our breed we won't sell the kittens/cats to you. It's nothing against you as a pet owner, its for the safety of our animals.
